DECALOGUE
The Drummer's Ten Commandments
- Play as much as you can, playing an instrument at a certain level is a calling and playing the drums is a great fortune.
- Practice the technique, play along with records and play with other musicians, in as many different styles as possible. All of these things, with dedication.
- Listen to lots of different drummers, from different eras, and to many kinds of music.
- Buy tons of records, go to live shows, read the drummer’s magazines and find out what the greats say, think and do.
- Learn how to play a melodic instrument besides the drums.
- Think about music, not just drums, there should be a musical reason behind every note you play, and and each one should be played with solid conviction.
- Make mistakes with conviction! (and don't let your playing be affected by mistakes).
- Think a lot more feel than time, in other words feel a lot more than you think.
- The more you can relax, the better you’ll play. Focus and breathe, always.
- Take care of the quality of your practice other than the quantity, develop positive habits in your practice routine and in your playing.
- Meet other musicians, producers, artists. Music is a kind of art that is created, enjoyed and shared with other people.
And most of all, play to feel good and have fun!
